February 1, 2007 - Dover , New Hampshire -
Members of the USS Hartford mess crew will be guest students of the Atlantic Culinary Academy at McIntosh College beginning in January 2007. The project, which is part of the American Culinary Federation’s “Adopt a Ship” program, will train 3 crew members at the Dover campus. The USS Hartford, a Los Angeles Class submarine is currently stationed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where it is being re-fitted.
Chef Instructor Charles Limoggio said, "Our approach to the Adopt a Ship program is a bit different from others in the Federation. Because of our proximity to the shipyard, and the longer term availability of the crew, we are able to bring students into our campus kitchens and offer them the same instruction as our full time culinary students."
The USS Hartford crew members come from Iowa, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. It is expected that the crew members’ program at McIntosh will be completed around the time the boat’s refitting is completed in the spring of 2007.
Atlantic Culinary Academy’s Executive Chef Jim Gallivan said, "We are honored to provide culinary training to those who are defending our country. The program will also provide our students with a new culinary experience and an appreciation of the wide variety of professional culinary opportunities."
